The U&I girls epitomise the perfect gal pal friendship, like long lost sisters who instantly bond and want to spend every moment together. They also happen to be inspiringly creative and talented. Enough to get my sickening jealousy started.
The girls, Jodie Hayes (fashion designer from Melbourne) and Emma Bäcklund (designer and photographer from Sweden), established U&I in 2012 after their meeting in Torquay, Victoria, and the search for an ocean-led life came to fruition. Their long blonde hair and surf attitudes paid off.
Everything is designed and made in Melbourne, with all the mesh fabrics from the current collection hand-dyed. They are girls after my own heart. Hand-dying is music to my ears, the absolute desire of my soul. As is anything promoting a life by the beach, and finding beauty in one’s own skin.
I suppose their little motto may be, “be comfy, be loved, be happy”.
